ICS 161 – Introduction Computer Graphics
(This is a living document and will change according to the needs of the class)

Course content

Week 1:

  • Introduction to animation production process, from concept to post production.
  • Becoming familiar again with 3D program GUI (graphic user interface)

Week 2:

  • Basics of polygonal modeling techniques (vertices, edges, faces)  constructing from a plane; subdivisions, extrusions, etc.
  • In 1 hour's time, how many self-contained objects can you model starting from  a   plane:

Table, chair, walls with windows

Week 3 - 5:

  • Class project for instruction in progress: Still Life
  • Working with curves; lathes/revolves, lofts, etc.
  • Introduction to NURBS and irregular shapes

Week 6 - 7:

  • Class project for instruction in progress: Still Life
  • Progress grade; reviewing work done in past weeks(s)
  • Principles in texture mapping and different UV mapping methods.

Week 8 - 10:

  • End class project for instruction: Still Life
  • Lighting
  • Camera view and staging
  • Progress grades and review of the collective needs of the class.

Week 10 - 12:

  • Project assignment:

    Pick a theme that will give direction in creating an illustration of a "moment in time".
    Examples: It can be a sentence from a story that you have written or read. You may create an image for presentations done for other subjects such as:
